Q: How much can I save on travel?
Half of the applicable travel expense is discounted up to a maximum of 20,000 JPY. 70% of the discount is in the form of a travel coupon. Remaining 30% of the discount is in the form of local coupons which can be used at applicable locations within the applicable travel area.

Example 1:
40,000 JPY lodging fee
40,000 x 50% x 70% = 14,000 JPY travel coupon (discount on lodging fee)
40,000 x 50% x 30% = 6,000 JPY in local coupons

Example 2:
20,000 JPY lodging fee
20,000 x 50% x 70% = 7,000 JPY travel coupon (discount on lodging fee)
40,000 x 50% x 30% = 3,000 JPY in local coupons

Example 3:
60,000 JPY lodging fee
20,000 (max limit) x 70% = 14,000 JPY travel coupon (discount on lodging fee)
20,000 (max limit) x 30% = 6,000 JPY in local coupons

IMPORTANT: start date for local coupon is currently scheduled for October 1st, 2020. For trips taken before then, ONLY the “travel coupon” portion of the campaign will be available.

Q: What are applicable travel expenses?
Currently, lodging fees & travel packages of lodging fees & transportation fees should be applicable. Lodging fees inclusive of meals should also be applicable.

Q: Are day trips applicable?
Yes. Set plans that include roundtrip transportation and applicable travel/leisure activities are applicable. NOTE the maximum discount is 10,000 JPY for day trips – 7,000 JPY for the travel coupon and 3,000 JPY for the local coupon.

Q: What is the local coupon?
The component of Go To Travel which is meant to encourage purchasing at applicable & participating stores, restaurants, leisure facilities, transportation modes, etc, which are in proximity to the travel destination. 30% of the discount recieved with Go To Travel is in the form of a local coupon. Current plans call for both electronic & paper coupons.

IMPORTANT: start date for local coupon is currently scheduled for October 1st, 2020. For trips taken before then, ONLY the “travel coupon” portion of the campaign will be available.

Q: How do I get the Go To Travel discount?
It depnds on when you stay and when you are booking.

Trip: July 22 ~ 31 Aug / Booked: on or before July 26
Pay full price for the trip at the time, and then traveller applies afterwards to be reimbursed for the discount amount (max of 14,000 JPY / person / night)

Trip: July 27 ~ / Booked: on or after July 27
There are two basic patterns…

(A) Book your travel and then apply for & received the “travel coupon” discount which can be applied at the time of payment. For this scenario the most common pattern is probably booking directly and then paying at the lodging facility (with the discount taken out).

(B) Book your travel with the “travel coupon” discount already taken out. For this scenario booking on an applicable online booking web site (Rakuten, Jalan, Yahoo, etc.) might be a common pattern.

For both cases the “local coupon” should be obtained by the traveller in either electronic or paper form. In the case of direct hotel reservations the local coupon will generally be available only in paper form, received on the day of check-in.

NOTE (1): start date of the local coupon is currently scheduled for October 1st, 2020.

NOTE (2): The available budget for the campaign will likely be divided amongst both geographic area & sales channels. You may find the Go To discount unavailable for a certain area but available for others. Likewise, you may find the area available but the sales channel you want to buy through is not available (in that case, search for an alternate sales channel). Booking as soon as possible – and when available applying for the travel coupon before the actual travel date as soon as possible – will help assure you can use the discount.

Q: Can I book my travel anywhere and get the Go To Travel discount?
No. Both the sales channel (online booking web site, travel agent, hotel, etc.) & the lodging facility must be registered for the Go To Campaign in order to be covered by it. If in doubt, contact the sales channel to confirm.

Q: How do I apply for the discount after I have stayed?
Traveler will need to submit some documents:

(1) Application form 申請書 shinsei sho
(2) Receipt from the travel (original) 領収書(原本) ryou-shuu-sho (genpon)
(3) Accomodation certificate (get this at the time of your stay) 宿泊証明書 shukuhaku-shou-mei-sho
(4) Personal information consent form 個人情報同意書 koujin-jyouhou doui-sho
(5) Bank account information 口座確認書 kouza kakunin-sho

After submitting the documents and they are succesfully processed, money is transferred to the traveler’s bank account, etc. There may be an electronic way to submit the documents (not just postal) as well. Check the following site for latest details (Japanese-only): https://goto.jata-net.or.jp/

IMPORTANT: The cut off date for applying for reimbursement after stay is September 14. It is reccomended that you either book your stay with Go To discount already applied or obtain the travel discoun coupon BEFORE you check-in.

Q: How do I obtain the "travel coupon" before my stay date?
From July 27 travelers should be able to book travel with campaign discount already applied via certain sales channels.

If you cannot book an already discounted rate, you should be able to book the applicable un-discounted rate and then apply for the travel coupon which can be used to discount at payment time.

The travel couplon can be applied for at this site (Japanese only): https://staynavi.direct/

If you are in doubt about how you can receive the Go To Travel discount, it would be best to contact the sales channel (website, travel agent, etc) or the lodging facility.

Q: Is EVERY hotel & lodging facility in Japan applicable for the Go To Travel campaign?
NO. Only hotels, loding & other facilities that have registered for the campaign and are following strict health & safety guideliness are eligible. Generally, you should be able to confirm participation by checking the hotel/facility’s web site, but if in doubt contact them directly.

Q: Is there a limit on the number of times I can use Go To Travel?
No. But there is a limit on the total budget allocated by the government of Japan. If that budget runs out then the campaign ends.

Q: Is there a limit to the number of days I can stay?
No. The Go To Travel discount is provided on a per person, per day basis.

Q: Can I use Go To Travel to eat at a restaurant?
The Go To Travel campaign is not for dining out only, however it seems likely that the local coupon portion of the campaign can be used at applicable & participating eating establishments. For restaurants, a separate Go To Eat campaign is planned.

Q: My municipality/prefecture is running its own similar campaign. Can I use both?
Each local or regional scheme will be different, please consult with the applicable municipality/prefecture for the rules.

Q: What for & where can I use the local coupon?
If applicable for your stay date, the local coupon can be used starting from your check-in day until & including the day of check-out. The local coupon is stamped with a geographical area within which it can be used. In the case of staying with Nishimuraya, the stay region will be Hyogo. The coupon can be used in Hyogo, Kyoto, Osaka, Okayama, Tottori, Tokushima & Kagawa prefectures.

The coupons can only be used at shops & facilities participating in the Go To Travel Campaign from the local coupon. Inquire with the shop/facility regarding their participation.

Please confirm with the shop/facility about items/services which are not covered by the local coupon, but in general the following are not applicable:

  • Lodging fees
  • Gift certificates, prepaid cards, prepaid tickets, etc.
  • Change is not given and returned items will not be reimbursed with cash.

Q: I have questions, who should I contact?
In general, contacting the sales channel (travel agent, online booking web site, hotel, etc.) where you will actually book the Go To Travel discount on would be best if you have questions.
